Bobby Sherwood has been a presence at the Deep Sea Roundup for many years.
That presence has been a reassuring one, said Charlie Zahn, a longtime member of the Port Aransas Boatmen, the organization that long has run the annual fishing tournament in Port Aransas.
Sherwood long has provided security for the Roundup.
“When I think about Bobby and his association with the Port Aransas Boatmen, I think about the goal of the Boatmen, and that is to have a family-oriented and safe fishing tournament in Port Aransas,” Zahn said.
“Bobby Sherwood absolutely guaranteed that the tournament be safe. For the over-20 years I have been associated with the tournament, he has provided security to insure he had no problem and security that he always donated at no cost to the Boatmen,” Zahn said. “He cared deeply about the Port Aransas Boatmen and those who chose to fish in the oldest fishing tournament in Texas.”
The Boatmen named Sherwood Boatman of the Year this year.

“ I’m honored they even considered me,” Sherwood said. “ They take care of the town, they give out those scholarships – they’re always there for the youth.”
Sherwood was referring to the fact that the Boatmen organization provides for various youth- related causes in Port Aransas. That includes giving hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of scholarships to Port Aransas High School seniors over the years.
Sherwood has been a member for more than 20 years but provided security for the Roundup even before that.
He said his security work was done on his own time, not as part of his work as constable of Nueces County Precinct 4.
Sherwood retired earlier this year after more than 30 years as constable.
In addition to providing security at Boatmen events, Sherwood has spent some time on the water over the years.
For several years, he ran a 46- foot boat called “Persistence,” by a friend, Larry Huffard of Austin.
He doesn’t run that boat anymore, but he still sometimes fishes with his son, Matt Sherwood, a Port Aransas fishing guide.
His favorite fishing memories are the ones that simply involve hooking lots of catches while hanging out with friends and family.
“One particular day, me and my wife and Matt and one of my wife’s friends – we went drum fishing and we caught lots of fish,” he said. “Just being out there with my wife, being able to do that has been the best thing.”
